Sports Portfolio Evaluation

Runner-Up #1:

  1. Alyssa Shukar
  2. Stories
  3. All the pictures were of a certain distance, all of the pics had the same feel, and some of the stories could have been told better.
  4. The street-sweeper photo was well done and the baseball picture added a happy feel.
  5. I didn't really like the portfolio because it was all mixed up. It transitioned from depressing to happy with no transitions. Also, I couldn't really tell what story the pictures were trying to tell. The only positive of the portfolio was that the lighting was good throughout and there were some really strong pictures.
Runner-Up #2:
  1. Nick Adams
  2. Stories
  3. The focus was off in the cheerleading picture, photographing disabled children is unoriginal, and the football player picture was framed incorrectly.
  4. The photo of a man jumping through pools of light was great and the bird flying had really interesting diagonal lines of blurred light.
  5. This portfolio had some cropping issues that I felt detracted from the overall impact of the photos. Many were cropped too tight, where the background was lost and the stories became hard to decipher. I didn't like this portfolio because I didn't find any interest in it, and the stories didn't feel complete.
Runner-Up #3:
  1. Josh Birnbaum
  2. Stories
  3. The angle and focus of some of the images were off, the picture of the ducks could have been done a lot better, and the portfolio as a whole didn't flow well from one photo to the next.
  4. The first image with the men covered in soap was a great image and he did a great job capturing the emotion of the moments in his pictures.
  5. This portfolio was the first that I have seen that really told stories with each image. I really didn't like how he put in two separate wheelchair stories because it was redundant. The second photo story was fantastic, so he should have never put the first one in.
Runner-Up #4:
  1. Justin Mott
  2. Stories
  3. The line of soldiers didn't lead to anything, the selective focus technique didn't work in any of the photos it was used in, and his portfolio building needs work.
  4. The first picture did a fantastic job of capturing emotion and he was more created than any of the previous photographers with his point of view.
  5. This was by far my favorite portfolio of the runner-ups because the photographer was actually creative in his approach. All of the pictures showed a different angle or point of view that made the portfolio more diverse and interesting. My only critique is that when he tried to use selective blur, he didn't leave part of the subject in focus so it just came across as a really bad picture.
Winning Video:
  1. The portfolio hard nice color and composition throughout. They also liked how the photographer mixed up his angles to create an array of different images. All of the photos told a story that didn't need a caption and captured their attention. They also liked how he got right in the middle of the action.
  2. I thought that the fact that every photo was unique and creative was excellent. I also liked the emotion he captured by being up close to the action. I think the only weakness of the portfolio was that the football stretching picture and the chaotic swim picture were essentially the same image. Overall, I agreed with the judges and definitely thought that this was the deserving winner.
Judges' Process:
  1. The judges looked at all the portfolios that they had originally marked as potential candidates for the winner. They then glanced over each one and narrowed down the playing field until they reached an agreement on the winner. When there was some debate, the portfolios were looked at more closely and discussed until a decision was made.
Individual Images:
  1. I agree with the judges about the image where the man was falling off his surf board after hitting a huge wave. I didn't like the picture and neither did they. They said that if the angle was steeper, the moment was better, or the cropping was better than the image could have been saved. I totally agree on all of these points.
  2. I disagree with the judges about the image where the swimmer is submerged in the warm up pool outside of her swimming pool. The judges liked the image and kept it in the mix because they liked the different shapes in the frame. I, on the other hand, didn't like the image because I thought the background was too distracting and could have been cropped better.
