Flag Raising on Iwo Jima: Joe Rosenthal

  1. I chose this image because it shows the american spirit, and makes me proud of my country. The flag being raised caught my eye because it stands out against the bare sky.
  2. This photo was taken during WWII on the small island of Iwo Jima where the US and Japan had been battling. When the americans were victorious, they went to raise a flag, but a commander called for a bigger one. As a result, the photographer had time to climb to where the soldiers were standing and capture the shot. This image is very famous, and has its own statue and memorial.
  3. There was no additional information.
  4. Name: Joe Rosenthal- Birth: 1911-Death: 2006-Place of Birth: Washington, D.C.-School Attended: University of San Fransisco
